❓Why this is the best recipe
- It's easy - A Bloody Mary is actually one of the easiest cocktails to make, and it works perfectly as an amuse bouche shot. A quick hit of savory tomato with a boozy kick and a nibble of a paired garnish.
- It's elegant - Serving an amuse bouche in a shot glass is one of my favorite things to do at dinner parties. Like this crab bisque amuse bouche and steamed mussels soup amuse bouche, they just look so good.
- It's unusual - No one expects a classy amuse bouche to appear before them. And people certainly don't expect a Bloody Mary amuse bouche shooter! Creating unique experiences through dining will always be memorable.
📖 Ingredients List
Here is what you will need to make your homemade bloody mary mix, the rim mixture and all the garnishes.
For the Bloody Mary cocktail
- Vodka - You'll need a good quality vodka to make the best bloody mary cocktails. As this is an amuse-bouche, we only use a little vodka. You can also leave it out to make a Virgin Mary.
- Tomato Juice - Buy unflavored tomato juice so that you are in control of all the flavors in the cocktail. Some people like to use clamato which is a mixture of clam juice and tomato juice, but this cocktail technically then becomes a Bloody Ceasar.
- Lemon Juice - A squeeze of lemon heightens and brightens all the flavors.
- Worcestershire Sauce - No one can pronounce it, but it's essential all the same. Be mindful of the fact that Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies, so it is not suitable for anyone on plant-based diet. You may prefer to let guests add their own serving of this super savory sauce.
- Tabasco - The chili heat of Tabasco works so well in these Bloody Mary shots. I only add a small amount, and guests can add extra if they wish. You could substitute for another hot sauce if you prefer.
- Ice - Mix this Bloody Mary recipe over plenty of ice to get it nice and chilled without watering it down.
For the Bloody Mary rim
You can adapt a Bloody Mary rim to suit you, changing the spice levels or mixing things up with super savory garlic powder. Rub a lemon wedge around the top of the glass first so it is wet, then dip it into the rim mix, which will stick to it.
- Celery Salt - This salt is heavily flavored with dried, powdered celery, which is the original pairing for a Bloody Mary.
- Garlic Powder - Bloody Mary cocktails are meant to be super savory, so garlic powder really adds a kick to them. I love to include it!
- Chilli Flakes - I like to have dried red pepper flakes on my glass rim as it adds some real fire and looks beautiful, too. You can swap it out for smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, or chili powder.
- Cracked black pepper - add as much as you like according to how warm you like it.
- Old Bay seasoning - you can use this as a substitute if you do not have all the individual ingredients for a bloody mary rim. Old Bay contains a mixture of celery salt, paprika, and other spices.
For the Bloody Mary garnish
The sky is the limit when it comes to Bloody Mary garnishes. I have included a list of ideas and you can choose your favorites. I like to thread them onto an appetizer skewer or cocktail skewer for dramatic effect and to make it easier for guests to eat them.
- Celery stick - a piece of celery is the classic addition to a Bloody Mary, and is also one of the most simple.
- Pickles - A whole gherkin or cornichon on a stick is a great garnish for a Bloody Mary cocktail shot. You can even add some of the pickle juice into the cocktail mix.
- Cooked prawns - Seafood lovers will adore a large shrimp on a skewer balancing on their shot glass.
- Boiled egg - If you use eggs, they will need to be hard-boiled eggs, or things can get messy. Use large eggs so that when you slice them into quarters, they are still big enough to hold together on a skewer.
- Bacon - Crispy bacon is one of the best garnishes for a Bloody Mary amuse bouche.
- Olives - Both green olives and black olives work well with Bloody Mary shooters.
- Cheese - A cube of hard cheese, like strong Cheddar also tastes delicious as part of your mini Bloody Mary bar.

🍅 How to make a Bloody Mary bar
- Add the vodka, tomato juice, and lemon to a jug or cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- Stir the mixture to fully combine all the ingredients.
- Rim each glass with the spice mix by first rubbing a lemon wedge around the edge of the glass and then dipping it into the spices on a small plate.
- Pour the Bloody Mary cocktail into each shot glass.
- Thread the garnishes onto cocktail skewers and balance on top of the rimmed glasses.
🌟 Top Tip
Leave the Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce out so that guests can add it themselves. Everyone likes their Bloody Mary differently!
❄️ Storage & Freezing
You can make the cocktail mixture ahead of time and store it in the fridge in an airtight container or jug covered with plastic food wrap/cling film. Give it a stir or gently shake before pouring and serving. It will keep for 1-2 days.
🥣 Equipment
Invest in some cute shot glasses to serve amuse bouche shots or canapes in, you'll find them really useful if you often entertain! I either make the cocktail in a cocktail shaker or in a measuring jug. I also like to get some fancy cocktail sticks to thread the garnishes on to.
❓Recipe FAQ
Bloody Mary cocktails used to be called a Red Snapper, but were supposedly renamed after the English queen, Mary Tudor. Her bloody reign gave her the nickname Bloody Mary.
An amuse bouche is a small dish, of one or two bites served between courses of a meal. It is not listed on the menu and is designed simply to surprise and delight guests. The phrase roughly translates to English as "delight the mouth".
