Weight Conversions (US ↔ Metric)
Depending on where you are in the world, you might find ingredients listed by the gram or in pounds and ounces. Here is a converter tool to help you out!
Grams to Pounds Converter
| Grams (g) | Pounds (lb) |
|---|---|
|
|
– |
And here are some quick conversions of common weights.
- 1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz) = 454g
- 1 ounce (oz) = 28g
- ½ pound = 225g
- ¼ pound = 113g
- 2 pounds = 907g (~0.9 kg)
One easy conversion to memorize that is particularly helpful for me is knowing that a single portion of meat or fish (or other protein) should be around ½ pound or 200-225grams a person.
Cup Conversions (Dry Ingredients – US Cups)
The cup system is a method of measuring by volume. Cup size varies across the world, so it is worth remembering that the US cup system is different from the UK and Canada, for example. This means that the weight varies by ingredient, and an instant calculator is harder to get right. A cup of flour is a different weight than a cup of rice, for example. Here are tables with all the common ingredient conversions.

When baking, I do always recommend weighing by the gram for precision. Baking is a science! It will really make a difference to your baked goods, such as bread and cakes, if you invest in an inexpensive digital scale.
Liquid Conversions
Liquid conversions from cups to grams will depend on the thickness of the liquid. But it's worth knowing that one gram of water is equal to one milliliter!
