Ingredients
- Camembert: Look for a round, matured Camembert cheese. Make sure it's not too soft or too firm.
- Round bread loaf: best bread for camembert is a round bread loaf that is sturdy enough to hold the melted cheese. A crusty baguette or sourdough loaf works well.
- Honey: Opt for good-quality honey that complements the rich flavors of the cheese. You can use maple syrup if worse comes to worst.
- Rosemary: Fresh rosemary adds a fragrant and aromatic touch to the dish. You'll need a small bunch of rosemary sprigs.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic cloves are ideal for imparting a subtle garlicky flavor. Use a few cloves, depending on your preference.
- Butter: I always use unsalted butter in my recipes so that I can control the amount of salt that goes into a dish.
- Salt and pepper: Season the dish with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance the flavors.

How to make Baked Camembert in Bread
- Preheat the oven to 350 F / 175 C.
- Using a bread knife, carefully slice the top third off the loaf of bread.
- Taking a smaller knife, cut the middle out of the base of the bread to create a space big enough for the camembert cheese. Use your hands to tear it out underneath. Set it to one side. Alternatively, you can tear it out; you will just end up with uneven garlic butter croutons rather than cubes which is not the end of the world at all.
- Using a tip of a knife, cut a crosshatch pattern on the camembert cheese (optional), then lower it into the bread bowl and scatter over it the rosemary sprig. Season with a pinch of sea salt and black pepper, and place the 'lid' back on top of the loaf.
- Place the camembert in bread on an oven tray and bake for 20-25 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cut the inner piece of bread into small cubes.
- Crush garlic cloves by sprinkling them with coarse salt and using the back of a spoon to mash them up.
- Melt butter in a frying pan on medium heat and add the bread and garlic at the same time. This is to avoid the garlic burning before the bread is crispy.
- Once the garlic butter croutons are browned on each side, remove them to a plate covered in a paper towel.
- Remove the baked camembert from the oven and take off the lid. Check it's melted by poking a knife into it.
- Arrange the croutons on top of the camembert in bread and then drizzle over the honey.
- Dig in with a fork, your hands, or anything you have nearby.
Plating and serving suggestions
Serve on a wooden cheese board with assorted crudités and the extra croutons around the edge to create a beautiful and appetizing party piece. It's also fun to put any additional croutons or crudités into the case the camembert came in.
Wine pairing
Soft, surface-ripened cheeses like Camembert work well with white wine that has the acidity to cut through the creaminess. I like to serve an oaked chardonnay with this baked camembert in bread. See my Wine and cheese pairing guide to learn more about wine pairing. And if you love cheese and food from France, I also have a dedicated French wines and cheese pairing post.
Variations

- Baked camembert toppings: Jam, figs, fresh herbs, cranberry sauce.
Equipment
You will need an oven tray, a Sharp knife, and a frying pan.
Storage
You won't have any leftovers. Trust me.
But if for some reason you do, keep them chilled and reheat gently when needed.
Fun tip
If you are making this baked camembert in bread for a party, make an extra one for you to eat in the kitchen or it will be gone by the time you get out there to try some.
FAQ
Crusty bread, such as a baguette or sourdough loaf, is ideal for dipping in Camembert. The crispy exterior and soft interior of these loaves of bread provide a satisfying contrast to the creamy and melted cheese.
Camembert cheese can curdle in the oven if it is overcooked or exposed to high temperatures for too long. It is important to monitor the baking time and temperature carefully to avoid overheating. Overcooking can cause the cheese to separate, resulting in a curdled texture.
Several flavors pair well with Camembert. Some popular options include sweet and tangy fruits like apples and pears, earthy flavors like walnuts or pecans, savory herbs like thyme or rosemary, and sweet condiments like honey or fig jam. Additionally, acidic accompaniments like balsamic vinegar or a tangy chutney can provide a nice balance to the rich and creamy Camembert.
