Baked Camembert With Honey And Garlic Butter Croutons

Published: Dec 6, 2021 · Modified: Mar 24, 2022 by Rosanna Stevens · This post may contain affiliate links · 5 Comments

Baked camembert with honey and garlic butter croutons...reader, this is pure indulgence, comfort food. Camembert baked in bread with sprigs of rosemary until it is melted and gooey? Covered in crunchy garlic butter croutons and drizzled in honey, that camembert taste perfectly complemented by the sweetness...it's obscene.

In fact, I feel as though this baked camembert recipe may need to be accompanied by a trigger warning as it is pretty obscene. Serve this as party food and quickly become everyone's favourite person. But make more than one, as trust me it will disappear fast.

In this baked camembert recipe we add the garlic butter croutons which elevate things and take slightly longer but believe me they are worth adding. Baked camembert with honey is the most delicious flavour combination so drizzling some of that sweet nectar on top just takes this appetizer from good to great.

Whole baked camembert in bread makes the best party food as it looks impressive and is actually very quick to make and low effort. You can make ahead and put it in the oven at the last minute, which is a real boon if you're the host and need to free up time. This gooey baked camembert with honey and crunchy garlic butter croutons is like nothing else on earth.

This recipe works well in the wintertime but let's be honest, melted cheese is good at any time of year, with anything. I could dip a shoe into baked camembert with honey and still love it.

    Ingredients

ingredients for baked camembert with honey and garlic butter croutons
    • Camembert
    • Round bread loaf
    • Honey
    • Rosemary
    • Garlic
    • Butter
    • Salt and pepper

See the recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

    Preheat the oven to 350 F / 175 C

Using a bread knife, carefully slice the top third off the loaf of bread.

Taking a smaller knife, cut the middle out of the base of the bread to create a space big enough for the camembert cheese. Use your hands to tear it out underneath. Set it to one side. Alternatively, you can tear it out, you will just end up with uneven garlic butter croutons rather than cubes which is not the end of the world at all.

    bread bowl for camembert

Lower the camembert into the bread basket and scatter over the rosemary sprigs. Season with salt and pepper, and place the 'lid' back on the bread.

Place the camembert in bread on an oven tray and bake for 20-25 minutes.

Meanwhile, cut the inner piece of bread into small cubes.

Crush garlic cloves by sprinkling them with coarse salt and using the back of a spoon to mash them up.

Melt butter in a frying pan on medium heat and add the bread and garlic at the same time. This is to avoid the garlic burning before the bread is crispy.

Once the garlic butter croutons are browned on each side, remove them to a plate covered in a paper towel.

Remove the baked camembert from the oven and take off the lid. Check it's melted by poking a knife into it.

Arrange the croutons on top of the camembert in bread and then drizzle over the honey.

Dig in with a fork, your hands, or anything you have nearby.

    Plating suggestions

Serve on a wooden cheese board with assorted crudites and the extra croutons around the edge to create a beautiful and appetising party piece. It's also fun to put any additional croutons or crudites into the case the camembert came in.

    Wine pairing

Soft, surface-ripened cheeses like Camembert work well with white wines that have acidity to cut through the creaminess. I like to serve an oaked chardonnay with this baked camembert with honey.

    Variations

    • Crudites - For those that don't eat bread, serve some crudites like carrot and apple slices to dip into the baked camembert.
    • Deluxe - You could add some caramelised onions as well as the garlic butter croutons
    • Extras - Add some dried fruit and nuts like cranberries and walnuts or pecans

    Equipment

You will need an oven tray, some kitchen knives and a frying pan.

    Storage

You won't have any leftovers. Trust me.

But if for some reason you do, keep them chilled and reheat gently when needed.

    Top tip

If you are making this baked camembert with honey and garlic croutons for a party, make an extra one for you to eat in the kitchen or it will be gone by the time you get out there to try some.
